As one of the most experienced and successful IP commercialisation companies in the UK, UMIP has a reputation for generating a pipeline of high value business propositions, drawing on the significant research base at the University.

UMIP typically forms 4-5 spin-out companies per year, and typically has 40 companies in its active portfolio at any one time.  UMIP works with the companies to raise finance from a growing array of investors.  External management with sector experience is progressively brought in to each company to support this process.  It raises in the region of £10m to £20m third party funding per year, and the returns from UMIP projects over the years have totalled almost £200M.

UMIP augments this activity with a Proof of Concept fund for early stage investments and the UMIP Premier Fund (UPF).  UPF is the first fund of its kind. It is a fund of £32M that makes late-seed stage investments in the £250-750k range, with both the intention and capacity to provide follow-on investment up to £3m.

UMIP has extensive networks in the corporate and business community, as well as its own in house legal team, and a formal arrangement with an executive recruitment organisation.

The majority of UMIP operational staff have an industry background, usually in project management, so UMIP very connected with the real world and is very disciplined in how it manages its ventures.
